In this course, students compose music using techniques derived from a broad range of jazz styles. Approaches to working with form, melody, harmony, and rhythm are examined and analyzed as exemplified in a variety of significant works which may include repertoire drawn from the "Great American Songbook," as well as pieces by important jazz composers such as Duke Ellington, Billie Strayhorn, Mary Lou Williams, Horace Silver, Thelonious Monk, Charles Mingus, and genres such as hard bop, soul jazz, etc. Students then create their own compositions utilizing the techniques revealed through this study; they are encouraged to apply these in original ways.
