Students analyze the legal, ethical and professional issues confronted by the nursing profession within a variety of practice settings. Students study and apply health care and regulatory legislation and the College of Nurses of Ontario Practice Standards and Practice Guidelines to legal, ethical and professional issues. Concepts related to practical nurses' responsibility, autonomy and accountability to the client, the nursing profession, the health care team, the employer and self are explored within the contexts of self-regulation, quality assurance and decision-making. Collaborative and consultative practices between the registered practical nurse and registered nurse and with other members of the inter-professional and health care teams are explored. Current nursing practice trends and issues, including empowerment, advocacy, culture and diversity, nursing image and the influence of technology and informatics are discussed and analyzed.
