Diversity and Indigenous Peoples in Canada

Course Code: PFP 103

Academic Year: 2025-2026

In this course, students will critically reflect on the systemic oppressions experienced by equity-deserving groups in Canada who were historically and who are currently underserved and underrepresented. Students will reflect on their own social identity, power and privilege as well as the principles of Equity, Diversity and Inclusivity (EDI). A central focus of this course is to expose students to the strategies for building relationships with equity-deserving groups, that include Black, Indigenous and Persons of Colour (BIPOC). Students will explore the history of colonization and Treaties with Indigenous Peoples in Canada. Students will also examine Human Rights Legislation and Powers and Privilege within Policing Services that historically and currently continue to impact and oppress these equity-deserving groups. The strength and resiliency of Indigenous Peoples within Canada is a focal part of this course and by examining the Truth and Reconciliation Commission's Calls to Action, students will work towards increasing their awareness and knowledge of the EDI initiatives necessary within the justice system that lead to collaborations and allyship.
