Students will acquire a general and functional knowledge of how the common law system operates in Canada. Student knowledge of our criminal law system will be specific to the role of criminal investigation and enforcement as a patrol officer, with an emphasis on their legal responsibilities outlined in the Charter of Rights and Freedoms. This course will also enable the student to assess and mediate the rights and obligations of citizens involved in private disputes relating to contract, torts family, property, and employment law. Students will locate, evaluate and apply case law to various situations to enhance their research and analytical skills, while alerting them to the nature and complexity of legal issues that are challenges in the policing profession.
