People, Mind and Body

Course Code: PHIL 2020

Academic Year: 2024-2025

What does it mean to call yourself a self? What is it about you that remains the same over all the years of your life, such that you can say that this is one person's life? Is it that you have a soul that remains with you throughout that journey? Is it your memory that connects your life together? Is it the consistency of your character, your values, or life story? Or is it just a matter of having the same brain today that you had last year and the year before? In this course, we will examine the answers given to these questions by some of the great philosophers, such as Rene Descartes, John Locke, and Jean-Paul Sartre, but at the same time, we will explore the research of contemporary psychologists and neurologists such as Philip Zimbardo, Antonio Damascio, and Oliver Sacks.
