This is a foundational course introducing the basic concepts of dispensing prescriptions and their application in a practical laboratory setting in a step wise manner of increasing complexity. This includes interpreting the prescription, translating Latin abbreviations, calculating the quantity from directions for patient use, generating labels, pricing and maintaining accurate patient profiles, including all record keeping required by legislation. Students will also be introduced to interacting effectively with clients in a simulated community pharmacy setting. All these tasks will be performed using manual and computerized processes. Students will work independently and collaboratively to dispense medications, perform quality assurance checks on other students' work and perform inventory management duties.
