Journalism and Democracy

Course Code: POLS 2200

Academic Year: 2024-2025

This course will look at the essential and often fractious relationship between the free press and government (and other institutions) in a liberal democracy. Drawing on research and writing from the fields of political science, philosophy, cultural studies and mass communications, the course will examine the influence the news media can have on democratic institutions, explore the forces that can prevent the news media from fully and freely playing its crucial role in a democracy, and consider the consequences for citizens when the news media's democratic role is, in some way, impinged.
