This course focuses on using the Internet as an investigative tool (Open-Source Intelligence or OSINT) for both private-sector and public-sector investigations. Delivered in computer lab facilities, the course instructs students on conducting open-source, online investigations in an effective, legal, and ethical manner. Students learn about IP addresses and how the internet works, how to maximize the effectiveness of their searches and search engines, how to use the OSINT framework to conduct a simple online investigation, and to find and analyze images and videos. The course further provides students with the tools and techniques to seek and acquire online evidence from the Internet's most prominent social media networks.
