Human Development and Family Dynamics Across the Lifespan

This course provides an understanding in developmental stages across the lifespan and how these may be influenced by cultural values, diversity, practices and religious beliefs. In addition, self-concept, individuality, personality traits and Maslow's Hierarchy of Needs and Erikson's Stages of Psychosocial Development will be explored. Emphasis will be placed on the role of the personal support worker in providing respite and assistance to families, including the effects of illness, stress and disability placed on family relationships. Concepts of family violence and abuse are also introduced. Possible signs and symptoms of abuse as well as appropriate actions to be taken, including legal requirements, if abuse is suspected are described and discussed.
