Course Code: PSYC 1600
Academic Year: 2025-2026
This course introduces major concepts, prevailing theories, and cross-cultural empirical research related to the growth and development of children, as they apply prenatally, in infancy, and in early childhood. Drawing on lectures and class discussions, applied activities, and student-centered, group exercises, students examine the physical, cognitive, and socio-emotional development of children from pre- conception to the age of six. An emphasis on child development from a culturally diverse framework informs all stages of development. Students also explore various methods of studying children and youth in these ages and stages of development. With the overarching purpose of gathering a holistic perspective of the child, the course content follows typical prenatal and early childhood development with a deliberate focus in areas of concern in relation to Child and Youth Care practice.
