This course examines the human relations and crisis intervention work of the paramedic. Classroom experiences will be combined with ideas and concepts from psychological sciences and clinical approaches to provide an integrated understanding of the complexities involved in intervention and management of crisis situations. Students will be able to demonstrate the effective use of nonverbal communication and mindful listening. Further, the course will acknowledge the impact of crisis and trauma on paramedics and their families and will develop the capabilities of the student to identify and deal with stress and crisis in their own lives. Students will develop an understanding of stress management techniques, and be able to compare and contrast healthy and unhealthy coping strategies. They will examine Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder and a range of substance use disorders that may be observed in first responders.
