The effect of science in our society is profound, subtle, and sometimes shocking. Its rich history has given us insights into our place in the universe, revealed our relationship with other species on this planet, and has yielded technologies that permeate our lives. In this course, students examine topics such as the Scientific Method, Evolution, Ancient and Modern Cosmology, our Solar System, Genetics, Biotechnology, Ecosystems, the potential for Extraterrestrial Life, Climate Change, Earthquakes, Pandemics, and the dangers of Pseudoscience. In research based on assigned readings and recent scientific discoveries and breakthroughs, students analyse the ripple effect of science across all strata of society and speculate on possible ramifications, from the potential benefits of science to harmful unintended consequences.
