Facility Planning and Warehousing

Course Code: SCM 3040

Academic Year: 2025-2026

Costs of facilities (manufacturing plants, warehousing, distribution centres, hospitals, offices, etc.) and their effect on material flows and on inventory are estimated at 20%-50% of operational costs. Good planning and execution of facilities and material flows has a significant long term effect on the cost and on the responsiveness of the supply chain. In this course, students study, plan and design facilities in the supply chain, with a main focus on warehousing and its functions. The expanded range of services provided by warehouses, such as postponement, kitting, minor assembly and use of cross-docking, is explored. Students will analyze the main activities performed in a warehouse / distribution centre: receiving, cross-docking, put-away, replenishment, picking, shipping, etc. Students will use the concepts of this course to design efficient warehouse layout and material handling, which maximize space and labour utilization and make effective use of docks, material handling and other storage equipment.
