The building sector represents a large percentage of overall energy and resource consumption and contributes 40% of the carbon emissions driving climate change. Yet buildings also offer opportunities for meeting growing global energy demand, while mitigating climate change and environmental impacts. This course is an introduction to the study of Sustainable Building Design and its relationship to Sustainable Energy and Building Practice. The course will be introductory and theoretically based, focused on the origins of the green building movement & the principles of integrated design process (IDP); review the Codes & Standards utilized to regulate the design community; investigate major aspects of sustainable building design, namely, sustainable sites, water efficiency, energy efficiency, materials and resources, and indoor environmental quality; fundamental of sustainable building design process; and introduction to LEED project management.
