Sexual Diversity: Contemporary Social Issues

Course Code: SOCI 277

Academic Year: 2023-2024

Not so long ago, gay and lesbian people in North America hid their sexuality from their families, their co-workers and even themselves out of fear of rejection and fear for personal safety. Now there are 'queer' talk show hosts, politicians, teachers and musicians who live openly, and same-sex couples have the legal right to marry in some places. This course will explore the history of the gay and lesbian movement and its transformations to include contemporary sexual diversity. The course will also deal with a number of social issues, such as bullying/shame, marriage, parenting, inequality and resistance, related to the queer community. The principal goal of the course is to promote understanding and acceptance of people living non-heteronormative lives.
