This course examines the risk management challenges that exist in the sport industry. Topics include: the tort legal process, the types of risk the exist in sport, the concepts of negligence and liability, standard of care for program participants, the process of recognizing, assessing and controlling hazards, risk defenses against an accusation of negligence, and emergency action plans. Students learn techniques to manage and minimize the potential for harm to sport participants. Through class discussion and group projects students develop skills to help minimize the likelihood of liability lawsuits being brought against sport service providers.
