Students in this course will be introduced to theoretical concepts and skills to assist their clients in defining their strengths and needs and identifying desired personal outcomes. Students will learn basic active listening skills for counselling. Emphasis will be placed on how to help clients identify and capitalize on their strengths by engaging in a positive assets search. This will focus on clients' concerns and issues and specifically on their resolution. Learning to facilitate client self-empowerment and development will involve developing skills and an understanding that the empowerment process encompasses a complex dynamic relationship and interaction between a multitude of elements - contextual, structural and psychological - from within an integrated anti-racist feminist framework. This course is also designed to provide opportunities to apply the concepts and skills through experiential exercises and role plays.
