TESL 5005 provides students with introductory knowledge and skills related to the adult English as a Second Language (ESL) classroom, focusing on a variety of teaching approaches, methods and techniques. This course will focus on theory and practice in various adult ESL settings: Continuing Education ESL programs, Language Instruction for Newcomers to Canada (LINC), ESL Literacy, Occupation-Specific Language Training (OSLT), English for Academic Purposes (EAP), Teaching English as a Foreign Language (TEFL), and English for international students. As adult continuing ESL programs and LINC programs in Canada are regulated by Canadian Language Benchmarks (CLB), this document will be introduced and analyzed in relation to curriculum principles and textbook/materials evaluation and selection. This course will also address some classroom management principles. Related professional resources and organizations will be introduced to the students and incorporated throughout the course.
