Students will receive an introduction to the current practice of professional theatre in Canada from both a practical and an artistic perspective, including but not limited to administrative structures, employee functions, theatre mandates and the work produced. Students will gain an understanding of the range of opportunities for work in theatre and related areas of the entertainment industry. A foundational understanding of the requirements to being a crew member in the various production departments working on a theatrical production will also be introduced. Throughout the course, there will be an emphasis on the practices of professional conduct. Students will be introduced to the concepts and terms used in the critical analysis of theatre through discussions of designated performances that the students will attend. These performances and the theatres which produce them will provide essential case studies from which the class will consider and discuss the cultural landscape of Toronto within the context of national and international theatre practice.
