Colour and Composition

Course Code: VADA 107

Academic Year: 2025-2026

This course is a combined study of colour and composition - the central elements of picture making for both objective and non-objective aims. Students will learn the aspects of colour - hue, value and chroma - along with the colour theories of harmony and the complimentary and tertiary relations between colours. This study will be coupled with an investigation into composition and the formal arrangement of shapes. Compositional devices will be introduced to the students for various objectives from abstraction to realism. Fine painting examples of past artists will help support students' understanding of the theories of colour and composition. Successful completion of the coursework provides a foundational understanding for further exploration in representational and non-representational painting.
