This course critically examines the complex impact of media on victims and their communities, utilizing critical discourse analysis, anti-oppression, and intersectional frameworks. It focuses on the media's role in sensationalizing certain victims, with emphasis on privacy, dignity, and human rights. The course also explores emerging trends in cybercrime and the criminal justice responses, particularly where online communication platforms is used for child and youth exploitation, shaming, stigmatization, cyber gender-based violence, cyber trafficking, and cyber hate crimes targeting Indigenous, Black, racialized and sexually diverse individuals and communities.
