Victims at the Global Crossroads: Justice and Advocacy

This course critically examines the systemic and historical origins of victimization, tracing its legacy from colonialism, global conflicts, and systemic oppression to modern challenges such as voluntary or forced migration and climate-related displacement. With a focus on Indigenous, Black, and other racialized and marginalized immigrant communities in Canada, students will explore how global inequities contribute to victimization. The course also analyzes the role of international institutions and Canadian legal system in working with victims and their communities. Through a multidisciplinary lens, students will engage with strategies for promoting justice at both the local and global levels.
