Course Code

Academic Year

2016-2017

In Canada, there have always been alterNative ways. These are Aboriginal ways of living that differ from the usual patterns of life in North America. They are rooted in thousands of years of living on this land, and calling it sacred. What is learned in this class? You learn of the different paths followed by various Aboriginal peoples across Canada, from the doomed Beothuk in Newfoundland, to the woodworking wonders of the Haida in British Columbia. You learn what is not usually taught in Canadian schools: more than just igloos, caribou and canoes. You learn of Aboriginal heroes and history, of government ignorance and oppression, and how the people have responded, in ways both positive and negative. You learn of how Aboriginal people have influenced the development of Canada, and of how they could influence it further in the future.
