The Arts and the 21st Century Imagination: Longing for Paradise

This course will teach you how to appreciate 21st-century art. By examining various art forms such as painting, popular song, literature, and film, you will become more acquainted with what selected artists have valued, an inquiry that can help you understand your own values. By the end of this course, you will have a deeper understanding of various art forms; greater confidence and ability to criticize and analyze works of art; and familiarity with themes common among 21st-century works of arts, especially that of ""longing for paradise.""
Two field trips will be included in the course. These vary each semester and consist of visits either to the Art Gallery of Ontario, a theatre, a movie theatre, the ballet, or the opera. The course will also feature classroom visits by distinguished Canadian writers.
