2016-2017

The elements of drawing, observation, recording and compositional organization are fundamental to an artist's visual education. This fundamental course will provide and introduce the students to the visual vocabulary of drawing. Through materials and processes, drawing will be explored as a means of visual thinking, a way to depict what we see and visualize what we think, and a method of communicating ideas. Manufactured and natural forms are central to the investigation of proportion, structure, volume and space through line, tone, shape, movement and texture. Shading and mark making techniques will also be taught to facilitate personal expression and the technique of drawing spatially. In this course, students also learn the fundamentals of artistic perception, basic compositional elements; dot, line and plane; linear expressions, and organizational techniques for drawing. This course facilitates the technical skills of observation, analysis, selection, interpretation and expression which are studies through sequential projects. Using a wide range of drawing materials and hands-on practice, students are introduced to drawing as a means of intense visual investigation.
