n our frenetic world, the average person views thousands of advertising messages each and every day. What impact does advertising have on us as individuals - and as Canadians?

This course is designed to introduce students to the many dimensions of advertising, with a special focus on the evolution of the Canadian advertising industry and the changing face of advertising in society. Topics will include the types of media and vehicles, the evolving role of technology in advertising, and the impact of advertising on politics, society and culture as seen through the eyes of key advertising theorists. Students will also examine the differences in advertising between Canada and the United States, and learn how best to respond to the challenges of advertising to French- and English-speaking audiences in Canada, as well as other ethnic and minority groups.

Through an exploration of the various departments within the agency structure (including research, creative, account management and media buying), students will discover how these disciplines complement one another in the development of the many communications that reach our eyes and ears on a daily basis.

This course will consist of lectures, group discussions, group work and written assignments, all designed to provide students with a solid introduction to the advertising profession.
