This course is recommended for students who wish to apply to graduate studies following graduation. It offers students an overview of research methods used in communication studies, distinguishing between everyday ways of knowing about media and its effects, and the methods employed by academic research. Students learn to craft arguments based on research, to write, read and interpret academic papers. They consider the relevant theoretical approaches, quantitative and qualitative research methods, and ethical considerations used to produce research reports and critical essays. Ethnographic research is particularly highlighted, given the current rise in demand for this mode of qualitative research in real and social media settings by many types of organizations.
