Protest is a powerful social and cultural force around the world. What motivates people to act together in this way? In what ways do race, class, gender, national identity, religion, power, and sexuality shape these movements for change? In this interdisciplinary history course, we will examine modern social movements that have changed the cultural landscape across the globe, such as the Women's Liberation Movement, The Occupy Movement, and the Arab Spring. Students will discuss and debate cultural changes that have resulted from social movements in the past, as well as developments taking place today. By exploring political activities from around the globe, students will examine and more fully understand how social movements have shaped their personal present-day civil liberties.
