Not so long ago, gay and lesbian people in North America hid their sexuality from their families, their co-workers, and even themselves, out of fear of rejection and fear for personal safety. Now there are 'queer' talk show hosts, politicians, teachers, and musicians who live openly; and, same-sex couples have the legal right to marry in some places. In this course we explore the history of the gay and lesbian movement and its transformations to include contemporary sexual diversity. The course will also deal with a number of social issues related to the queer community such as bullying/shame, marriage, parenting, inequality, and resistance. The principal goal of the course is to promote understanding and acceptance of people living non-heteronormative lives.
