Pre-requisite: MEL. 376 Contemporary Songwriting and Analysis 1

This course further examines popular song forms and structures through a selected analysis and practical application of the history of contemporary songwriting. In particular, students will delve into issues relating to copyright and music publishing including: song revenue [publishing and performance royalties], publishing contracts, as well as standard clauses and negotiable elements. Students will develop and refine a selected body of their work to represent them as masters, as they look towards the evaluations that will qualify them for their degree. The quality and value of their own original songwriting will continue to be assessed in a workshop format, substantially on the basis of its competitive and marketable qualities in relation to the current industry marketplace.
