I thought I’d be a doctor or a pilot. In high school I was taking all university-level math and science courses that would lead me to one of these dream careers. Funny how things change!
After graduating high school I took a few years off. I originally planned to go to university but quickly realized that I was drawn to Humber’s hands-on approach to learning. I applied to Humber’s Business Management diploma program. My plan was to graduate, become an entrepreneur and open my own venture. However, during this time I recognized that studying business was not the right fit for me. At the same time I came to the conclusion that college helped me discover myself and understand that it’s okay to feel uncertain about the future.
At that point I learned I had a passion for design. When I was younger I always looked forward to decorating my bedroom for Christmas. My inspiration for design started with watching all the design shows on HGTV. It’s amazing how design can change the whole entire mood of a room.
Humber’s Interior Decorating program seemed like the perfect fit and now I can happily say that I am in the right program. Every day I wake up excited to go to class and learn. One of my favourite class projects to date was designing a celebrity’s condo, which included floor plans, design space, theme and concept planning. I feel privileged to learn from well-respected industry professionals, many owning interior decorating firms. This year, my professors asked me and some classmates to decorate the lobby of The Westin Hotel in Toronto for the winter holidays.
Upon graduating, I plan to open my own design business focusing on upscale residential and commercial spaces. My goal is to create aesthetically beautiful spaces that people can share with each other and create memories. I feel confident that my learning experience at Humber will prepare me to achieve that goal!
