About:
The theme of this program is “Learning Osaka, the Mercantile Capital of Japan”. While studying at Kansai University, you will learn about the history and culture of Osaka and reflect on the diversity of ideas and values as they compare with your home country. This program focuses on “seeing, listening and experiencing”, including visiting various historical and cultural facilities beyond lectures in the classroom.
During this program, students will study three main themes/classes:
Introduction to Osaka: In contrast to Tokyo, the Mecca of Japan' s bureaucrats and politicians, Osaka has traditionally been a city of business generated by its merchants and their bustling business transactions. This class will look at how Osaka' s suburban areas developed, with a focus on the World Exposition held in 1970 , which spurred change. This class also looks briefly at people' s lives in Osaka, while referring mainly to its entertainment, which makes Osaka different f rom other major cities in Japan.
Japanese Business Culture: This class includes a series of presentations designed to engage students in an examination, analysis and discussion on various aspects of Japanese Business Culture:
Entrepreneurship: In this class, you will look at entrepreneaurship in Osaka by offering examples of companies established by well-known entrepreneurs, who started or developed their businesses with innovative ideas. This companies include Panasonic, Nisshin, Hankyu Railways, and Sharp (or Omron). Each case study involves unique ideas of its founder, offer a deeper understanding to corporate culture in Osaka and Japan.
Students also have the option to apply for the optional Survival Japanese Language with Cultural Experience course. Please note that this optional course has an additional fee of JPY 10,000.
Earn Humber Elective Credit:
Two Week Program: Earn transfer credit to satisfy one GNED course (diploma) or one lower-level breadth electives (SCC Category) course (degree) from Humber. Must be approved in advance by Humber College.
Four Week Program: Earn transfer credit to satisfy up to two GNED courses (diploma) or two lower-level breadth electives (SCC Category) courses (degree) from Humber. Must be approved in advance by Humber College.
