Keynote Speaker: Friday, August 27, 2021
Date: Friday, August 27
Time: 9:00am – 10:15am
Keynote Speaker: Anthony McLean
In Celebration of Educators
This is an encouraging, morale-boosting talk to inspire educators who give their best every day. Teachers and administrators are often overwhelmed and sometimes feel burnt out by the end of the week. In the midst of a busy year, it’s easy to forget that the daily interactions we have with students are sometimes the most valuable moments of our day.
In this laugh-out-loud presentation, Anthony McLean tells funny and inspiring stories about the teachers and administrators who changed his life by acknowledging his effort, encouraging his strengths, and pushing him to give his best. Every educator needs this reminder — the reward for not giving up on our students is the ability to make a difference and change the world one student at a time.

Universal design for learning (UDL) is a framework to improve and optimize teaching and learning for all people based on scientific insights into how humans learn. UDL encourages the design of flexible and accessible learning materials, methods and assessments and the proactive removal of barriers at the design stage, keeping in mind that learner variability is the norm. In this session, we will share strategies and tools to incorporate UDL principles in your courses.
1:30pm - 3:00pm An Introduction to Research & Innovation and SoTL
Welcome to Research! This seminar will introduce you to the various paths available in research here at Humber. We will cover a breadth of topics like ‘how to better engage with students’ (the scholarship of teaching and learning or (SoTL)) through to ‘how to engage with industry’ (various Tri-Council grants). The Office of Research and Innovation (ORI) serves as our research hub and includes what supports we provide such as the Scholar’s Café, various communities of practice, the Journal of Innovation in Polytechnic Education (JIPE) and Humber Press. We also offer a buffet of lunch and learn workshops (for example human-centered design, design thinking, creative problem solving, values-based innovation, data storytelling, behavioural economics). Our workshops are open to all Humber staff (faculty and students). Bring your curiousity!
