Topic: Transitioning in Higher Education: Exploring Advocacy and Support

Trans and gender diverse students often carry the weight of self-advocacy and seeking support within higher education, often struggling to find the right allies and support that will help them succeed in higher education institutions that do not make it clear that they belong there. Meditating on the reminder that "ally" is not an identity, how do we move towards actionable steps as faculty/staff, administrators, and community members to ensure the success of trans and gender diverse students? As a student who has publicly transitioned in higher education, Kain invites the community to imagine a campus where their success is not an anomaly but the norm. Investigating themes of discomfort, allyship in the classroom and beyond, and the invisible struggles of trans and gender diverse students.

Bio: Kain (They/He) is a recent graduate of Social Service Work who serves 2SLGBTQ+ and deeply-rooted* youth as a peer support worker and facilitator. They have chosen to intentionally use their lived experience as a transmasculine person, with all of his intersecting identities, to complicate global conversations around gender and disrupt binary thought. He works from the belief that we must create our own networks of support, shared knowledge, and resources outside of the systems that exist in the pursuit of liberation for all. *Adopted from @sundusabdulhadi to replace BIPOC
