Join the LGBTQ+ Resource Centre as we recognize the Trans Day of Remembrance on November 21st from 1-3PM in WEL201 (FYE space, second floor of the Student Welcome and Resource Centre).

We gather on the Trans Day of Remembrance to honour those who have been lost as a result of anti-transgender violence, and bring attention to the continued violence endured by the trans community.

This event is open to everyone and includes a march around the Lakeshore Campus (rain or shine). The march route is accessible.

Transgender Day of Remembrance is held on November 20th to honour Rita Hester, who was murdered on November 28th, 1998 in Aliston, Massachusetts. This murder began the “Remembering Our Dead” web project and a San Francisco candlelight vigil in 1999 started by Gwendolyn Ann Smith. This web project slowly evolved into an international day of action. Since 2010, Transgender Day of Remembrance has been observed in over 185 cities throughout more than 20 countries.

This day raises public awareness of hate crimes against transgender people. Day of Remembrance publicly mourns and honours the lives of those who might otherwise be forgotten. This day also gives allies a chance to step forward with us and stand in vigil, memorializing those who’ve died by anti-transgender violence.

Over the last decade, more than one person per month has died due to transgender-based hate or prejudice, regardless of any other factors in their lives.
