This theoretical course introduces the nursing profession and the roles and responsibilities of the Practical Nurse. Students learn about legislation, the College of Nurses of Ontario as the regulatory authority and about professional associations that influence nursing. Of key importance is practising in the best interests of the public and protecting the public from harm through self-regulation. Students examine the client-nurse-environment, Canada's health care system, professional identity, determinants of health, conceptualization of health and wellness, critical thinking, therapeutic relationships and communication, conflict resolution, and group process. The Roy Adaptation Model Theoretical Framework frames the nursing process and is used to explore health promotion, illness prevention, and maintenance of health. Students use self-reflection to explore personal values, beliefs and experiences and to build cultural and spiritual competence and relational practice.
