President’s Blog: A message about hate

Throughout the COVID-19 pandemic, divisions in our society have become increasingly apparent. These divisions relate to inequitable access to resources based on race, gender, sexuality, disability and other identity constructs. As an institution, Humber works to address these challenges and support our community.

This weekend, as protests were held in Ottawa, there were also acts of racism, antisemitism, homophobia, transphobia, and more.

Humber condemns all acts of hate.

Humber is committed to fostering a working, learning and living environment in which everyone feels a sense of belonging and that they are valued. The principles of equity, diversity and inclusion are integral to creating a healthy and inclusive college and campus experience.

This spring, Humber will launch its inaugural Institutional Equity, Diversity and Inclusion (EDI) Framework, developed by our EDI Taskforce, that will advance EDI, anti-Indigenous and anti-racism initiatives throughout the college, and work to address the needs of students and employees.

We also work to support other organizations to build their EDI capacity. The Transformative Equity, Inclusion & Belonging Leadership program, offered through Humber’s Continuous Professional Learning program, will help organizations strengthen their EDI, anti-Indigenous and anti-racism competencies and develop tools to aid self and organizational transformation and accountability.

The strength of the Humber community is the diversity of peoples and the diversity of lived experiences.

We will continue to lead courageously by standing against hate in all forms and live Humber’s values in everything we do. We are stronger together.
