Through practical, experience-based learning and expert instruction, you’ll develop the knowledge to safely assist with personal care, mobility and household management for individuals across the lifespan. You’ll also learn to recognize and respond to the physical and emotional changes associated with aging and illness, helping clients maximize their independence

Interprofessional Education

Interprofessional Education (IPE) courses are a key part of your program, offering valuable opportunities to learn with, from, and about students across the Faculty of Health & Life Sciences. Start - Completion Timeline

January - students beginning their studies in January complete the program in two consecutive academic semesters. (January through to end of August)

May - students beginning their studies in May complete the program in two consecutive academic semesters. (May through to end of December)

September - students beginning their studies in September, complete the program in two consecutive academic semesters. (September through to end of April)

North and Lakeshore Campuses  

Throughout the program, students will participate in 300 hours of field experience. In Semester 1, students learn and practise important personal support worker skills in Humber’s simulation learning labs. In Semester 2, students complete two unpaid field experiences in Toronto and the Greater Toronto Area (GTA) allowing you to gain valuable hands on practical and professional skills.  

The Semester 2 field experience is divided into two rotations over 13 weeks: 160 hours in a long-term care facility and 120 hours in a community agency. Hours and number of days per week vary depending on the type of facility and shifts assigned; most range from seven to eight hours per day or evening. The long-term care experience is fully supervised in the long-term care facility. During the community experience, students have field advisors who visit on a regular basis to support student learning. 

Humber Heights  

Throughout the program, students will participate in 300 hours of field experience. In Semester 1, students learn and practise important personal support worker skills in Humber’s Living Classroom simulation learning labs at The Village of Humber Heights. In Semester 2, students complete two unpaid field experiences, allowing students to gain valuable hands on practical and professional skills.   

The Semester 2 field experience is divided into two rotations over 13 weeks: 160 hours in Humber Heights Memory Care and long-term care area and 120 hours in Humber Heights Retirement and Assisted Care areas. Hours and number of days per week vary depending on the type of facility and shifts assigned with most ranging from seven to eight hours per day or evening. The long-term care experience is fully supervised by Humber clinical teachers. During the community experience, students have field advisors who visit on a regular basis to support student learning.

Admission Requirements

Admission selection is based on the following 3 requirements:

    Academic

    To be eligible for admission, you must possess the following:

    • Ontario Secondary School Diploma (OSSD) or equivalent including these required courses: 
      • Grade 12 English (ENG4C or ENG4U or equivalent)
      • Three Grade 11 or Grade 12 C, M or U courses in addition to those listed above

    Mature Applicants

    Diplomas and Certificates

    An applicant is considered a mature applicant if they have not completed secondary school or other postsecondary school, and will be 19 or older as of the first day of classes. Humber will invite you for testing to demonstrate that you meet all listed course requirements.

    Degrees

    An applicant is considered a mature applicant if they have not completed secondary school or attended postsecondary studies, and will be 21 or older as of the first day of classes. Mature applicants for degree programs will be required to meet course requirements at the U/M level or equivalent.

    College Transfer Applicants

    Diplomas and Certificates

    An applicant is considered a college transfer applicant if they have completed some or all of a college-level credential. Humber may use a combination of secondary school and/or college courses and grades to determine program eligibility.

    Degrees

    An applicant is considered a college transfer applicant if they have completed some or all of a college-level credential. Humber may use a combination of secondary school and/or college courses and grades to determine program eligibility. Applicants must have an overall minimum grade point average (GPA) of 65 per cent in the program. Applicants are required to disclose and provide academic transcripts for all course work completed at the postsecondary level.

    University Transfer Applicants

    All applicants whose first language is not English must meet Humber’s English Language Proficiency Policy.

    International Credit Evaluation

    Canadian citizens or permanent residents with international education are required to provide a credential evaluation. Note, for international High school education course by course evaluations, ICAS must be used. For international post-secondary education, a WES evaluation must be provided. In situations where you expect to apply for transfer credit, it is recommended that a course by course WES evaluation is completed.
