Humber’s Bachelor of Interior Design degree program balances creativity with sensitive, pragmatic design thinking. Our graduates problem-solve, investigate and explore design environments where people thrive. 

Engaging interior design studios enable you to master an evidence-based design process, develop effective presentation abilities and acquire vital professional practice skills. Team collaboration among student groups mirrors industry team practices. 

Observational field trips provide opportunities for you to connect key classroom theories, such as light and colour, sustainability and universal design, as well as the perception of space and human interaction, with built environments. In the fourth year, you will engage with industry mentors to research, develop and document a large-scale interior design project from initial concept to construction documentation. 

Additionally, a self-directed volunteer project helps connect your passion for design for a purpose that supports the environmental, social or economical benefits to both community and the design industry. Students have worked with organizations such as the Toronto District School Board, the Naval Reserves, Habitat for Humanity, and youth and women’s shelters.

  To be eligible for admission, you must possess the following:

  • Ontario Secondary School Diploma (OSSD) or equivalent including these required courses:
    • Grade 12 English (ENG4U or equivalent) minimum 65 per cent
    • Grade 11 or 12 Mathematics (MCR3U, MCF3M, MDM4U, MCB4U, MGA4U, MCV4U or MHF4U or equivalent) minimum 60 per cent
    • Four Grade 12 U or M courses in addition to those listed above
    • Overall minimum grade point average (GPA) 65 per cent

  or

  • Mature student status

  or

  • College or university transfer status

  Mature Applicants

  Diplomas and Certificates

  An applicant is considered a mature applicant if they have not completed secondary school or other postsecondary school, and will be 19 or older as of the first day of classes. Humber will invite you for testing to demonstrate that you meet all listed course requirements.

  Degrees

  An applicant is considered a mature applicant if they have not completed secondary school or attended postsecondary studies, and will be 21 or older as of the first day of classes. Mature applicants for degree programs will be required to meet course requirements at the U/M level or equivalent.

  College Transfer Applicants

  An applicant is considered a college transfer applicant if they have completed some or all of a college-level credential. Humber may use a combination of secondary school and/or college courses and grades to determine program eligibility.

  Degrees

Applicants must have an overall minimum grade point average (GPA) of 65 per cent in the program.   International Credit Evaluation

  Canadian citizens or permanent residents with international education are required to provide a credential evaluation. Note, for international High school education course by course evaluations, ICAS must be used. For international post-secondary education, a WES evaluation must be provided. In situations where you expect to apply for transfer credit, it is recommended that a course by course WES evaluation is completed.

  Portfolio

  A portfolio is a collection of work which tells us about your creative and problem solving process, your drawing skills and how you present yourself as an artist and designer. The work you present is extremely important in your application. Your portfolio is reviewed by Interior Design faculty to determine your suitability for the program.

  Applicants are asked to submit a portfolio that includes three creative pieces, with a written interpretation of the third piece. All the work submitted should be original. Be sure to date and title each creative submission. The requirements for these submissions are as follows:

  Submission #1 — Space or still life study that demonstrates your use of colour and composition.

  Start by choosing and arranging objects with interesting materials and textures that you care about. In a medium of your choice, draw or paint the composition considering light reflections, shadows, depth, tonal value, and texture. Please include a photograph of the scene you created as well as your work.

  Submission #2 — Black and white line drawing that demonstrates technical skills and level of complexity. 

  This drawing should show an exemplary interior space or a piece of furniture from any point of view (i.e. perspective or other spatial representation). For this drawing you may use rulers, pencils, pens, or any software you are familiar with such as AutoCAD, Revit, SketchUp, or Adobe Illustrator. Please work from a space or piece of furniture you find interesting and have observed directly, including a photograph of it as part of the submission.  

  Submission #3 — Open piece showing creative thought and versatility.

  This last submission is your choice and could include videos, drawings, physical models, collages, a photographic series, or any other artistic or design work. For time-based work, you may include a link to an online sharable YouTube video, for example. Additionally, please write 350 words or less that describes your chosen piece, the significance of the title, and any books, movies, art, or anything else that may have inspired it. Keep in mind that this written interpretation should be your unique perspective on your work, revealing something surprising or unexpected about the work or your creative process.

$500 - materials, books and miscellaneous (for each year); $500 safety boots and hard hat; access to a computer with internet, word processing/presentation software; additional software (also available to students in computer labs on campus).
