Bachelor of Community Development

Honours Degree

Program Code: CD411

Campus: Online

Length: 4 semesters

Humber’s fully online Honours Bachelor of Community Development degree completion program offers a unique blend of theory and practice-based experience that can be completed in as quickly as 2 years. The degree consists of four semesters and a 420-hour field experience and builds upon previously developed knowledge and skills acquired in a related human services diploma or a mix of credential and relevant work experience.

Students will refine their skillset in effectively engaging communities, building capacity for change, leading projects, organizational management, navigating public policy as well as community driven, assets-based advocacy. Humber’s Bachelor of Community Development offers students the opportunity to enhance their professional career and take it to the next level by providing flexible access to a recognized degree in the field of community development. Students admitted to the program will enter directly into Year 3.

Graduates will gain and further refine the knowledge and skillsets necessary to engage in the following, among many other in-demand skills:

  •      identify and build capacity of community assets, identifying root causes of problems
  •      support transformational leadership in communities
  •      participate in effective program development and evaluation methods
  •      enact socially innovative approaches and social entrepreneurship
  •      understand organizational governance and financial structures
  •      collaborate with community stakeholders on participatory action research (PAR)
  •      contextualize contemporary social and local issues
  •      engage in international community development

Students will engage in a 420-hour as part of the program. Students may work on an applied community development project or may work directly with established community partners.

The field experiences may be in a social service, community, educational or non-profit organization where students will have an opportunity to work in the community development field. During this field experience, students may have a variety of responsibilities including assessment, research-based work, working directly with community groups and individuals, as well as supporting community workers, educators and/or social science professionals. Field experience opportunities are arranged with the help of a dedicated field advisor and are typically unpaid.
