Cardiovascular Technology

Ontario College Diploma

Program Code: CT211

Campus: North

Length: 5 semesters

This two-year intensive program prepares students with the essential knowledge and technical skills required to perform electrocardiograms, exercise tolerance tests and ambulatory monitoring in the role of a cardiovascular technologist. The program emphasizes a hands-on approach through in-class clinical simulation and a clinical practicum. Areas of focus include performing various non-invasive cardiac testing such as electrocardiography, stress testing, ambulatory monitoring and pacemaker follow-up. Students develop critical thinking skills by integrating knowledge of cardiac anatomy, pharmacology and various pathophysiology to provide accurate diagnostic information to members of the health-care team.

Clinical practicums take place in Semesters 3 and 5. Across two supervised clinical placements, students apply and refine their cardiovascular technology skills in real-world health care settings. Beginning with foundational patient care and diagnostic testing in Semester 3 and progressing to complex cases and advanced procedures in Semester 5, students gain hands-on experience, develop clinical judgment, and collaborate with health-care teams to deliver high-quality cardiovascular care.

Cardiovascular Technology Professional Readiness

The Cardiovascular Technology program at Humber Polytechnic prepares students for the dynamic responsibilities of working in cardiac diagnostics. This career requires a high level of physical and mental readiness, as technologists often spend extended periods on their feet, assist patients with varying levels of mobility, and must be prepared to respond quickly in urgent situations. Strong attention to detail and technical accuracy are essential for operating specialized equipment and monitoring variable patient conditions. Equally important are the interpersonal and emotional skills needed to support patients during stressful procedures and to communicate effectively within fast-paced and interprofessional healthcare teams. Due to the complex and active nature of the role, applicants are encouraged to research the profession to ensure they are prepared to meet the physical, technical, and emotional demands of this career path.
