Humber’s Game Programming advanced diploma program is project-driven and focuses on programming and designing game engines for the purpose of game development, from indie to AAA. You will work on team projects using programming tools to develop, test and maintain game applications through the practice of theories of usability, information architectures, network architecture and industry standards of practice. Topics such as C++ programming, graphics, mathematics, physics, artificial intelligence, Unity/Unreal game engine development, and computer networking are all covered by a comprehensive set of courses.

Throughout your study, you will work with peers in related programs such as Visual and Digital Arts, and Animation - 3D which allowing you to work collaboratively work, as well as  build high-quality assets for use in the games you are developing as a student programmer.

You will graduate with a significant mid-program project and capstone project to demonstrate your coding talents using game engines (such as Unity or Unreal) and also your ability to create your own C++ game engine. With a high degree of game engine expertise, familiarity with 3D modelling, scripting, and technical direction, you will have the tools you need to compete and succeed in the rapidly expanding field of game development.

Applicants must meet all the requirements below in order to meet minimum program eligibility. Meeting minimum eligibility requirements does not guarantee an offer of admission.   To be eligible for admission, you must possess the following:

  • Ontario Secondary School Diploma (OSSD) or equivalent including these required courses:
    • Grade 12 English (ENG4C or ENG4U or equivalent)
    • Grade 12 Mathematics (MAP4C, MCT4C, MDM4U, MCB4U, MGA4U, MCV4U or MHF4U or equivalent)
    • Two Grade 11 or Grade 12 C, M or U courses in addition to those listed above

  Physics and/or computer science is recommended preparation for this program.

  or

  • Mature student status

  or

  • College or university transfer status

  Mature Applicants

  Diplomas and Certificates

  An applicant is considered a mature applicant if they have not completed secondary school or other postsecondary school, and will be 19 or older as of the first day of classes. Humber will invite you for testing to demonstrate that you meet all listed course requirements.

  Degrees

  An applicant is considered a mature applicant if they have not completed secondary school or attended postsecondary studies, and will be 21 or older as of the first day of classes. Mature applicants for degree programs will be required to meet course requirements at the U/M level or equivalent.

  College Transfer Applicants

  Diplomas and Certificates

  An applicant is considered a college transfer applicant if they have completed some or all of a college-level credential. Humber may use a combination of secondary school and/or college courses and grades to determine program eligibility.

  Degrees

  An applicant is considered a college transfer applicant if they have completed some or all of a college-level credential. Humber may use a combination of secondary school and/or college courses and grades to determine program eligibility. Applicants must have an overall minimum grade point average (GPA) of 65 per cent in the program. Applicants are required to disclose and provide academic transcripts for all course work completed at the postsecondary level.

  International Credit Evaluation

  Canadian citizens or permanent residents with international education are required to provide a credential evaluation. Note, for international High school education course by course evaluations, ICAS must be used. For international post-secondary education, a WES evaluation must be provided. In situations where you expect to apply for transfer credit, it is recommended that a course by course WES evaluation is completed.

Internet-enabled Personal Computer

Laptop Requirements 

Upon admission, students are required to own or have guaranteed access to a laptop. The Game Programming courses are designed such that the professor can jump from theoretical to practical aspects of game development at any time during class. Therefore, students are expected to bring a laptop to every class. Students are advised to choose a laptop that can handle the newest versions of Visual Studio, Unity, Unreal, 3DS Max, OpenGL, and Android Studio. Professors will generally be using the Microsoft Windows operating system in class.

Approximately $50 – computer lab fee (per semester) and $2,000 – textbooks, course packs, print cards, etc. (for complete program).
