Agencies in Canada and abroad are in need of skilled individuals to write policy; advocate to developed nations’ governments; and manage, develop and grow international development and disaster relief projects around the world. Graduates may find themselves working for government agencies, non-governmental organizations (NGOs), charitable and non-profit organizations, foreign and humanitarian aid organizations, think tanks, and international development organizations in roles such as:

  • child welfare policy analyst
  • community social development officer
  • employment equity policy consultant
  • human rights officer
  • international aid and development officer
  • immigration policy analyst
  • lobbyist
  • social policy researcher

Students learn from faculty chosen for their field expertise and experience that they have gained from numerous international non-governmental organizations (NGOs) or United Nations agencies, and acquire relevant hands-on experience through a work placement within the development/humanitarian aid sector.

Work Placement

You will gain industry experience and build your international development network with an eight-week (minimum) work placement within the development/humanitarian sectors. Many students choose to do this placement overseas but it can also be done here in Canada.

With the program co-ordinator’s support, placements are found through a combination of your interests and contacts with graduates and industry partners. The educational foundation for the work placement includes learning how to optimize resumés, LinkedIn profiles and cover letters, as well as covering the broad set of skills needed to be comfortable and safe working outside of Canada.

Courses

Current students, please make sure to review your MyHumber Academic Progress report to confirm which courses you should register into for your Winter semester. Courses with in-person requirements will likely also have online components. Humber may need to change plans for in-person learning, subject to government and public health directives and/or additional health and safety considerations.

Admission Requirements

Applicants must meet all the requirements below in order to meet minimum program eligibility. Meeting minimum eligibility requirements does not guarantee an offer of admission. Admission decisions will be available via MyHumber, or by email and mail. Admission decisions will not be released by phone.

    To be eligible for admission, you must possess the following:

    Mature Applicants

    Diplomas and Certificates

    An applicant is considered a mature applicant if they have not completed secondary school or other postsecondary school, and will be 19 or older as of the first day of classes. Humber will invite you for testing to demonstrate that you meet program eligibility.

    Degrees

    An applicant is considered a mature applicant if they have not completed secondary school or attended postsecondary studies, and will be 21 or older as of the first day of classes. Mature applicants for degree programs will be required to meet course requirements at the U/M level or equivalent.

    College Transfer Applicants

    Diplomas and Certificates

    An applicant is considered a college transfer applicant if they have completed some or all of a college-level credential. Humber may use a combination of secondary school and/or college courses and grades to determine program eligibility.

    Degrees

    An applicant is considered a college transfer applicant if they have completed some or all of a college-level credential. Humber may use a combination of secondary school and/or college courses and grades to determine program eligibility. Applicants must have an overall minimum grade point average (GPA) of 65 per cent in the program. Applicants are required to disclose and provide academic transcripts for all course work completed at the postsecondary level.

    University Transfer Applicants

    Canadian citizens or permanent residents with international education are required to provide a WES or ICAS evaluation.

    Essay

    Applicants are required to submit answers to the following questions in the form of a 300-500 word essay.

    1. Statement of Interest
    What does the term “international development” mean to you? How do your interests, skills and previous activities make you a good fit for this program? How will this program prepare you for your career?

    2. Travel and International Experience
    Practitioners are often required to work with individuals of different cultures and nationalities and/or travel to different countries. Please describe any experiences you have had where you had to work with people from cultures other than your own and how this experience enhanced your desire to work in the International Development field.

    3. Languages
    The international nature of development works often requires languages other than English. Please describe any skills you have speaking, reading and/or writing languages other than English.

    4. Full-time and Summer Employment
    Describe recent full-time employment, if any, and summer activities for the past three summers, especially any experience with children, youth, the elderly or other vulnerable persons. Also note any extracurricular activities, including when you were involved in the activity, extent of involvement and level achieved. This document is available in alternate format upon request.
