Admission Requirements

Applicants must meet all the requirements below in order to meet minimum program eligibility. Meeting minimum eligibility requirements does not guarantee an offer of admission. Admission decisions will be available via MyHumber, or by email and mail. Admission decisions will not be released by phone.

Admission selection is based on the following 5 requirements:

    Academic

    To be eligible for admission, you must possess the following:

    • Ontario Secondary School Diploma (OSSD) or equivalent including these required courses:
      • Grade 12 English (ENG4U or equivalent) minimum 65 per cent
      • Five Grade 12 U or M courses in addition to those listed above
      • Overall minimum grade point average (GPA) 65 per cent

    or

    or

    Mature Applicants

    Diplomas and Certificates

    An applicant is considered a mature applicant if they have not completed secondary school or other postsecondary school, and will be 19 or older as of the first day of classes. Humber will invite you for testing to demonstrate that you meet program eligibility.

    Degrees

    An applicant is considered a mature applicant if they have not completed secondary school or attended postsecondary studies, and will be 21 or older as of the first day of classes. Mature applicants for degree programs will be required to meet course requirements at the U/M level or equivalent.

    College Transfer Applicants

    An applicant is considered a college transfer applicant if they have completed some or all of a college-level credential. Humber may use a combination of secondary school and/or college courses and grades to determine program eligibility.

Applicants must have an overall minimum grade point average (GPA) of 65 per cent in the program.     Online Audition

    Please submit an audition video with the following requirements:

    Two Prepared Pieces Without Accompaniment:

    1. A jazz selection (Charlie Parker Omni Book or other jazz transcription).
    2. A classical study equivalent to Grade 8 Conservatory (no accompaniment necessary). Sources may include Selected Studies for Saxophone (Voxman).  
    3. Improvise a tune of your choice (jazz standard preferred) with Jamie Aebersold play-along track (or similar) or a live rhythm section.

    Scales and Arpeggios:

    1. C, Ab, E Major; D Harmonic Minor, F Melodic Minor Scales. m.m. quarter note = 120 (play eighth notes) (minimum tempo)
    2. C Ab, E Major; D Harmonic Minor, F Melodic Minor Arpeggiated Triads
    3. All scales should be played full range at horn. E.g. C major start on low C, go up to high F (above 3rd ledger line) then down to low B then end on low C.

    Theory Test

    The Theory and Ear Training test is a required test for all students auditioning for the degree program. It is approximately 30 to 50 minutes in length. The test has a written portion and an aural identification/dictation portion. There is no sight singing component. Study theory basics, scales and chords, and be able to identify scales, intervals, and chords played in the audio. The details on how to complete this test will be available on SlideRoom.
