Admission Requirements

Applicants must meet all the requirements below in order to meet minimum program eligibility. Meeting minimum eligibility requirements does not guarantee an offer of admission. Admission decisions will be available via MyHumber, or by email and mail. Admission decisions will not be released by phone.

Admission selection is based on the following 5 requirements:

    Academic

    To be eligible for admission, you must possess the following:

    • Ontario Secondary School Diploma (OSSD) or equivalent including these required courses:
      • Grade 12 English (ENG4U or equivalent) minimum 65 per cent
      • Five Grade 12 U or M courses in addition to those listed above
      • Overall minimum grade point average (GPA) 65 per cent

    or

    Mature Applicants

    Diplomas and Certificates

    An applicant is considered a mature applicant if they have not completed secondary school or other postsecondary school, and will be 19 or older as of the first day of classes. Humber will invite you for testing to demonstrate that you meet all listed course requirements.

    Degrees

    An applicant is considered a mature applicant if they have not completed secondary school or attended postsecondary studies, and will be 21 or older as of the first day of classes. Mature applicants for degree programs will be required to meet course requirements at the U/M level or equivalent.

    College Transfer Applicants

    An applicant is considered a college transfer applicant if they have completed some or all of a college-level credential. Humber may use a combination of secondary school and/or college courses and grades to determine program eligibility.

Applicants must have an overall minimum grade point average (GPA) of 65 per cent in the program. Applicants are required to disclose and provide academic transcripts for all course work completed at the postsecondary level.

    International Credit Evaluation

    Canadian citizens or permanent residents with international education are required to provide a credential evaluation. Note, for international High school education course by course evaluations, ICAS must be used. For international post-secondary education, a WES evaluation must be provided. In situations where you expect to apply for transfer credit, it is recommended that a course by course WES evaluation is completed.

    Online Audition

    Please submit an audition video with the following requirements:

    Scales: 

    Perform all scales ascending and descending in quarter notes at a minimum tempo of 120 beats per minute (BPM).

    G major two octaves

    Db major two octaves

    B harmonic minor two octaves

    ARPEGGIOS:

    All arpeggios should be performed within one octave (root to seventh) ascending and descending. There is no tempo requirement for arpeggios.

    Bb dominant 7

    Gb major 7

    C minor 7

    G minor 7(b5)

    Eb diminished 7

    BACH CELLO SUITE:

    Perform one of the movements from the Bach Cello Suites.

    JAZZ REPERTOIRE 1 - SWING:

    Perform one of the jazz standards listed below at a medium tempo (100-170 BPM). You can perform alone or with live/recorded accompaniment (Band in a Box for example). Please use the following format:

    Play the melody once through the form

    Play a solo (optional)

    Choose from the following standards - All the Things You Are, Stella by Starlight, Autumn Leaves, Yardbird Suite, Oleo, Anthropology or Billie’s Bounce.

    JAZZ REPERTOIRE 2 – BOSSA NOVA:

    Perform one of the pieces listed below at a medium tempo (100-140 BPM). You can perform alone or with live/recorded accompaniment (Band in a Box for example). Please use the following format:

    Play the melody once through the form

    Play a bossa nova style bass line once through the form

    Play a solo (optional)

    Choose from the following bossa nova standards – Blue Bossa, Corcovado (Quiet Nights), How Insensitive, Recordame or Triste.

    PIECE OF YOUR CHOICE:

    Perform anything that represents your musical interests and that demonstrates your general musicianship.  Maximum of 1 minute.

    Theory Test

    The Theory and Ear Training test is a required test for all students auditioning for the degree program. It is approximately 30 to 50 minutes in length. The test has a written portion and an aural identification/dictation portion. There is no sight singing component. Study theory basics, scales and chords, and be able to identify scales, intervals, and chords played in the audio. The details on how to complete this test will be available on SlideRoom.
