Founded in 1972, our program is one of the largest, most diverse and highly regarded of its kind in the country and teaches a wide range of styles.
By combining studies in the latest recording technologies and entrepreneurial business strategies with practical classes in performance, production, songwriting and composition in jazz, pop, R&B, Latin and world music, graduates will be well equipped with the knowledge and skills needed for success in today’s music industry.
Students study privately, in classroom situations, and with several of the more than 50 ensembles directed by a who’s who of Canadian music, and complete a major recording project/portfolio in fourth year. Further experience is gained through a work placement.
You will participate in a work placement designed to mirror the professional music world, which is largely characterized by contract, freelance and part-time employment. You are responsible for accumulating the equivalent of 420 hours of experience which will allow you to establish contacts and relationships with key companies and industry professionals.
Applicants must meet all the requirements below in order to meet minimum program eligibility. Meeting minimum eligibility requirements does not guarantee an offer of admission. An applicant is considered a mature applicant if they have not completed secondary school or other postsecondary school, and will be 19 or older as of the first day of classes. Humber will invite you for testing to demonstrate that you meet all listed course requirements.
An applicant is considered a mature applicant if they have not completed secondary school or attended postsecondary studies, and will be 21 or older as of the first day of classes. Mature applicants for degree programs will be required to meet course requirements at the U/M level or equivalent.

Canadian citizens or permanent residents with international education are required to provide a credential evaluation. Note, for international High school education course by course evaluations, ICAS must be used. For international post-secondary education, a WES evaluation must be provided. In situations where you expect to apply for transfer credit, it is recommended that a course by course WES evaluation is completed.
Prepared Pieces: Please have three selections prepared:
A) Autumn Leaves: Play one chorus of melody, one chorus pizzicato bass line and an improvised solo (arco) on the jazz standard Autumn Leaves. It can be in any key and accompaniment is provided.
B) Bach Suite: Play one movement of a Bach Suite for solo cello. It should demonstrate your musicality and instrumental ability.
C) Prepared Piece: Perform any piece of your choosing. It can be a jazz composition or anything that reflects your musical interests/abilities.
Intonation: You will be asked to tune quickly and accurately to a piano. You will also be asked to sing and play back pitches played on a piano.
Scales: You will be asked to play major, harmonic and melodic minor scales, two octaves, ascending and descending. For scales beginning on the C string (C, Db, D, Eb, E, F and F#), you will be asked to play 3 octave scales.
Chords: You will be asked to arpeggiate major, minor, diminished and augmented triads.
Sight Reading: You will be asked to read a part from existing cello literature ranging from easy to difficult.
Your sense of time and intonation are important.
The Theory and Ear Training test is a required test for all students auditioning for the degree program. It is approximately 30 to 50 minutes in length. The test has a written portion and an aural identification/dictation portion. There is no sight singing component. Study theory basics, scales and chords, and be able to aurally identify scales, intervals, and chords played on the piano. See Theory and Ear Training Test FAQs.
