Journalism, Bachelor of

Ministry Title: Bachelor of Journalism

Honours Degree

Program Code: 22241

Campus: Lakeshore

Length: 8 semesters starting in September

In the digital age, journalists have far more reach than ever before, as news organizations use innovative ways to tell stories and shape opinions using a range of media across multiple platforms. Our program puts you on the inside track of this challenging and fast-paced profession. In addition to journalism, you will have the skills to pursue many career paths including:

• arts and entertainment reporter
• communications specialist or media relations manager
• digital media production
• editor
• lifestyle and food writer
• researcher
• sports or business reporter
• web content producer

Our program has been designed with input from journalists and media professionals to ensure a leading-edge curriculum that provides the skills required for a wide variety of journalism careers across platforms. You will have access to industry-standard hardware and software and learn from industry professionals.

A work placement and the chance to report live from the scene of breaking news will give you a taste of the life of a working journalist, and the opportunity to craft informative stories with meaningful context and insightful analysis. You will learn how to manage web-based content for websites and mobile devices, as well as how to integrate social media into your work.

Note: This program will be offered at the North Campus beginning in 2022.

You will complete a 14-week work placement in the summer between Years 3 and 4. This placement provides an opportunity to gain experience in your chosen field and to meet professionals in journalism and digital communications settings. Many of the placements are offered in the Greater Toronto Area, a hub for Canada’s media industry. The work settings and the work itself support your professional development and will provide you with both the knowledge and skills required to enter the profession, as well as the confidence to perform the work required.
