Humber’s intensive Horticultural Technician Apprenticeship program applies horticulture principles, environmental stewardship and sustainability practices in its theory and applied learning. At Humber, we have exceptional facilities for horticulture and landscape education. The program uses the Humber Arboretum which is a 250-acre botanical garden centered on the west branch of the Humber River, surrounding Humber’s North Campus. It includes ornamental, woodland and wildlife gardens serving as a unique living classroom for plant studies, construction, arboricultural and horticultural skills. Our construction lab is housed in a weather-protected 8,000-square-foot facility which allows you to potentially build full-scale structures such as decks, gazebos and retaining walls. The in-college component of the program coincides with the typical slowdown in the horticultural industry during the winter months of January - March.

  Academic

  This apprenticeship is regulated by the Ontario College of Trades. You and your employer are required to register through your local Apprenticeship Branch Office of the Ministry of Labour, Training and Skills Development (MLTSD).

  You will be scheduled for the in-school portion of training by MLTSD. Apprentices who have been scheduled for the in-school training will be sent an Offer of Classroom Training letter from the MLTSD. For more information, visit ontario.ca/page/start-apprenticeship.

  Mature Applicants

  Diplomas and Certificates

  An applicant is considered a mature applicant if they have not completed secondary school or other postsecondary school, and will be 19 or older as of the first day of classes. Humber will invite you for testing to demonstrate that you meet all listed course requirements.

  Degrees

  An applicant is considered a mature applicant if they have not completed secondary school or attended postsecondary studies, and will be 21 or older as of the first day of classes. Mature applicants for degree programs will be required to meet course requirements at the U/M level or equivalent.

  College Transfer Applicants

  Diplomas and Certificates

  An applicant is considered a college transfer applicant if they have completed some or all of a college-level credential. Humber may use a combination of secondary school and/or college courses and grades to determine program eligibility.

  Degrees

  An applicant is considered a college transfer applicant if they have completed some or all of a college-level credential. Humber may use a combination of secondary school and/or college courses and grades to determine program eligibility. Applicants must have an overall minimum grade point average (GPA) of 65 per cent in the program. Applicants are required to disclose and provide academic transcripts for all course work completed at the postsecondary level.

  University Transfer Applicants

Equipment & Device Requirements

Additional Costs

Trainees are responsible for acquiring clothes appropriate for outside use: gloves; ear protection (muffs or plugs); The Canadian Standards Association (CSA)-approved Green Patch safety boots; Class E hard hat and safety glasses; and a pair of secateurs.
