Campus: Lakeshore
Length: 8 semesters
Humber’s Bachelor of Social Science – Criminal Justice degree program provides students with a comprehensive understanding of the criminal justice system, approaches to understanding why crime occurs, and opportunities to evaluate societal and individual responses to deviance and social problems. Providing a breadth of knowledge and experience, the curriculum combines both theory and applied practice with the objective of helping students to meet the dynamic demands of working in the justice sector. The curriculum combines both theory and applied skills, providing the breadth of knowledge and experience you need to meet the demands of working in this field. Emphasis is is placed on understanding the perspectives of special populations, marginalized groups, front-line professionals and members of the community who come into contact with the criminal justice system. The functions of societal institutions are also critically reviewed in our courses.
In the first year of study, students will participate in a social science foundation year (common platform with other students from the Faculty of Social & Community Services). In Years 2 through 4, the curriculum will then focus on content specific to the criminal justice system. Knowledge and critical skills will be developed through collaborative work to help prepare for a variety of fast-paced, ever-changing settings within the justice field. Students will gain a fundamental understanding of key concepts and theoretical approaches developed in relation to crime, victimization, criminalization, criminal justice, sociology, psychology, policy studies, law and correctional practice. Courses include an in-depth study of the nature and causes of crime, processes for managing crime, deviance and anti-social behaviour, victimization, mental health, community safety, approaches to rehabilitation, recidivism, social policy, restorative justice, and alternatives to incarceration.
Humber’s multidisciplinary teaching approach emphasizes critical thinking, analytical, organizational, research and strong writing skills. These are combined with the development of professional skills including communication, interpersonal skills, conflict management, problem solving, team building and leadership.
Students engage in one 420 hour Field Experience on a full-time or part-time basis. Field Experience provides students with practical learning opportunities where they can apply theoretical and course-based content to a real-world job experience. These experiences, which are typically unpaid, are arranged with the assistance of a placement advisor.
