If you are a compassionate and creative person with a strong desire to help people of all sociocultural backgrounds, a career in funeral services will allow you to make a difference in the lives of people who are grieving the loss of a loved one. Our graduate employment rate is high with students finding work as:
- funeral pre-planners
- junior licensed funeral directors
- transfer service sales representatives
Ours is the only English-speaking Funeral Service Education program in Ontario, through which you will learn the practical, technical and theoretical sides of funeral service and funeral home operation including the opportunity to access a human cadaver lab. A one-year work placement will further prepare you for this important and rewarding career.
The Bereavement Authority of Ontario, the provincial regulator, states that students of the program will complete a one-year work placement before they can be licensed.
To progress into Semester 3, students must start a full-time (paid) work placement in a funeral home after they have successfully completed exams in Semester 2. During Semesters 3 through 5, students complete their full-time learning by distance, and many of their assignments are based on the practical experience they are gaining in the funeral home. Humber assists students in finding placements, by working with industry partners to identify openings. However, students are responsible for finding their own work placement with a licensed Ontario funeral establishment.

Admission Requirements
Applicants must meet all the requirements below in order to meet minimum program eligibility. Meeting minimum eligibility requirements does not guarantee an offer of admission. Admission decisions will be available via MyHumber, or by email and mail. Admission decisions will not be released by phone.

To be eligible for admission, you must possess the following:
- Ontario Secondary School Diploma (OSSD) or equivalent including these required courses:
- Grade 12 English (ENG4C or ENG4U or equivalent)
- Three Grade 11 or Grade 12 C, M or U courses in addition to those listed above

Mature Applicants
Diplomas and Certificates
An applicant is considered a mature applicant if they have not completed secondary school or other postsecondary school, and will be 19 or older as of the first day of classes. Humber will invite you for testing to demonstrate that you meet all listed course requirements.
Degrees
An applicant is considered a mature applicant if they have not completed secondary school or attended postsecondary studies, and will be 21 or older as of the first day of classes. Mature applicants for degree programs will be required to meet course requirements at the U/M level or equivalent.
College Transfer Applicants

An applicant is considered a college transfer applicant if they have completed some or all of a college-level credential. Humber may use a combination of secondary school and/or college courses and grades to determine program eligibility.
Degrees

Applicants must have an overall minimum grade point average (GPA) of 65 per cent in the program. Resume and Letter of Intent
Applicants must submit a current resume and a 300-word letter of intent that describes how they will demonstrate professionalism while working as a funeral director and have a positive impact on the funeral industry.

Questionnaire
The questionnaire is to be completed by the funeral director who supervised your observation or work experience. The observation in a funeral home takes up to 40 hours to complete and applicants are required to arrange their own observation experience.

Class G2 Driver's Licence
To meet work placement requirements in the program, applicants must provide proof of an Ontario G2 Driver's Licence or equivalent.

Lab and Placement Requirements
The pre-requisite requirements must be fulfilled before the commencement of Semester 1 lab. Participation in Semester 1 lab, and subsequent Semester 3 placement, will not be allowed if not all the prerequisite requirements are met. Due to the variety of venues and possible changes in legislation, the requirements are subject to change. Valid Class G Driver's Licence
People interested in this program should be aware that a full G Driver's License and clean driver's abstract are required by most funeral establishments to be eligible for an internship placement.
